Athletics: Gongs galore for Irvine runners

DAVID Millar made it a double on Wednesday night when he claimed two titles for the price of one with a superb piece of front running at Troon.

The Troon 10k is also designated the West District 10k Road Championship and attracted a field of 1000 runners from all over Scotland.

Irvine Athletics Club star Millar had previously won the event in 2007 and this year it was clear that he intended to repeat the feat by surging away from the huge field as they set out along Troon promenade.

Millar led from gun to tape and, by the finish he had established a lead of more than one minute over the chasing pack, crossing the line in 31 minutes 29 seconds with Kerry Liam Wilson of Cambuslang second and Grant Baillie of East Kilbride next home.

The quality of Millar's win was all the more remarkable given that he also took the award for the first veteran Over 40.

Two more West District titles went Irvine's with Ian Berryman taking the M50 medal in 18th place overall with 36.59 and Andy Rennie claiming the M60 medal in 42nd place overall in with 38.18.

Other Irvine AC finishers were: Mark Livingstone (37.03); Alan Auld (37.07); Jim Sneddon (39.16); Jim Stevenson (41.10); Dave King (51.24); Jean Stevenson (54.18); Ann Marie Berryman (60.12).
