FORMER Irvine Athletic Club star John McCafferty has been chosen to represent Great Britain in a prestigious international tournament in France.
The 18-year-old Stevenston athlete travelled to England in January where he set a new Scottish record at the AAA Championship – his opening competition of the year – and his performance earned him his first call up to the British squad.
The youngster received the fantastic news late last week from UK Athletics organiser Rob Logan and will compete at U20 level as part of a four-man team in a two-day heptathlon event where he will come up against the top young stars in Europe, including big names from Spain and France.
The tournament is being held in Bompass on March 6 and 7 and John will join up with the GB team before flying from Heathrow on Friday.
This a great boost for the fast-rising young Scottish athlete after injuries sidelined him for majority of his 2009 season.
