Young Irvine athletes do well

A NUMBER of Irvine Athletic Club's young runners were among the Ayrshire Harriers team which competed in the Scottish Young Athletes Division One League match at Grangemouth.

There were a number of call-offs, mostly due to athletes having to do last minute studying for exams, but the team was hoping to do well and establish itself in the top division and there were a number of good performances from the Irvine AC contingent.

U13 girl Jill Taylor set a personal best two minutes 59.35 seconds in the 800m, breaking the three minute barrier for the first time, U15 girl Caitlin Lee also did well in the 75m hurdles finishing in 14.72 and Ashley McQueen posted a good 800m time of 2.46.89.

Best for the boys was Connor Whelan who ran 11.95secs in the 100m.

There are more opportunities for other Irvine AC athletes to get into the Ayrshire Harriers team by working hard at training and competing as often as possible.

The Ayrshire team finished sixth overall which was a good result for its first outing of the season.
