Irvine athletes run away with all the prizes
IRVINE Athletic Club swept the boards last week when its members won all three categories at the Ayrshire Harriers annual Athlete of the Year awards night.
David Millar took the award for senior athletes, Dougie Connery topped the poll in the veteran’s category and John McCafferty was voted best young athlete.
David has been Ayrshire's most successful road and cross country runner over the past five years winning the Ayrshire Cross Country, Ayrshire 10-mile road and West District 10k road championships in addition to regularly winning open road races all over Scotland.
Dougie won the Scottish Veteran’s 10k road championship and was veteran runner-up in the annual Polaroid 10k road race series.
Rising star John, pictured right, is one of the hottest talents in Scottish track and field events with a number of outstanding achievements at Scottish and British level.
He has a high jump personal best of two metres and in the past year he has been champion at the Scottish Schools, the Scottish Open U17s and the Celtic Games in addition to winning a silver medal at the AAA Championships and sees his future in the decathlon. He is already the Scottish U17 multi-event record holder and is ranked N°1 in the UK at his age group.
