John wins senior high jump

IRVINE Athletic Club’s John McCafferty was in sensational form at the West District Indoor Championship at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall Glasgow on Sunday.

The talented teenager, who was the youngest competitor in the event, won the senior high jump championship with a lifetime personal best clearance of 2.03 metres and then picked up another gold in the U20 high jump competition before making it a hat trick of titles when he claimed the pole vault crown with another personal best of 3.80 metres.

The multi-event Scottish decathlon record holder has been working on developing other disciplines like the hurdles, pole vault and long jump over the winter so that makes his high jump performances all the more impressive.

Another gold medal came the club’s way when U17 middle distance athlete Lee Wilson won the 800m title in a personal best time of two minutes two seconds – just reward for all the hard work Lee has been putting in over the past few months.

There’s still time to vote for John McCafferty as he bids to pick up the Young Scots Athlete of 2008 title at the Aviva meeting at the end of the month.

Voting closes on Saturday, January 24, just cut out the coupon in the Daily Record, nominate John and post it to the address in the paper.
