IT has been a somewhat fraught start to the season for new Buffs boss George Grierson, pictured, as he watched his team go down to both Dalry and Winton.
But although disappointed at the results, he thinks can see where his side is going wrong and insists he can solve the problems.
He is also realistic enough to recognise that they didn’t get very many breaks in either game although Grierson stresses that’s not an excuse.
“On Wednesday Dalry keeper Scott Wilson decided to have an absolute blinder against his old team and there’s not much you can do about that,” said Grierson.
“We also hit the woodwork a few times, but once again we also gave away a couple of soft goals.
Defensive frailties were again evident on Saturday when at least four of Winton’s five goals were in the eminently preventable category.
Buffs were also the victims of some very dubious refereeing decisions on Saturday and although Grierson admitted to asking the ref a few questions after the game, he stuck to his policy of not criticising the man in the middle.
“We’re working on our defensive problems and I’m actively looking to strengthen the goalkeeping situation and the middle of the defence,” admitted the Buffs boss.
“Our marking is too slack at times and we just don’t close down opponents when they run at our goal.
“However on the bright side there are quite a lot of plusses.
“The spirit in the squad is really terrific and that showed in the way they all battled back from adversity on Saturday.
“Up front Ben Lewis and Mark Ferris look as if they will be a handful for most teams and David Smith looks a real prospect at right back.”
Grierson’s hand will be strengthened by the return of Gary Russell, Johnny Sinclair and Ian McCraedie but he’s still scouring the market and would dearly love to add an experienced centre half like Neil Shearer to his squad.
The remaining sectional ties at Beith on Wednesday, Kilbirnie on Saturday and at home to Largs next Wednesday are now all about working towards the main target – immediate promotion from the Ayrshire District League.
