Bowls: Irvine bowlers lose out on promotion

A DISASTROUS last day defeat at Dumbarton helped condemn Irvine Indoor Bowing Club to another season in Division One Section C next year.

Irvine needed to win on Saturday and hope section leaders Paisley stumbled at Galleon but that defeat, coupled with a win for the Buddies, left them trailing in third place.

There was nothing between Irvine and Dumbarton until the halfway mark but counts of five, five and six helped the home side pull away and they eventually ran out comfortable 106-67 winners.

However after winning promotion last season, the team’s objective was to stay up and to go into the final game of the season with a chance of being promoted again was an achievement in itself.

Now that the players know what to expect at this level they go into next season confident they can make a successful promotion push in the coming campaign.

The Magnum Ladies ended their league campaign with an improved performance but still went down by 74 shots to 88 to East Kilbride.

In the Ayrshire Tartan League on Sunday Irvine were beaten 6-0 by the Galleon at Prestwick.
