Challenge for fishermen

THE winter rainbow trout fisher is faced with some very testing times because trout operate very differently at this time of the year.

For one thing the cold slows down their metabolic rate to such an extent that they feed very lightly and for polarised periods.

So miss these and you’ve missed your chance.

To complicate matters even further trout , like pike, often select different feeding time frames on different waters.

There is a great deal of merit in selecting just one or two waters for your winter excursions with a fly rod.

Stick to these and get to know them very well indeed.

Soon you will unravel the water’s peculiarities and the trout’s operating patterns –both in movement and feeding – and you can then base your style and locations around these.

So, for some good winter fishing, get to know your water.
