‘Back Bill’ call to all animal lovers

ANIMAL loving MSP Irene Oldfather is calling on North Ayrshire residents to back a bill that will tighten the laws on animal cruelty.

This week, the Cunninghame South MSP backed plans for the new bill saying it will reduce suffering of animals across the country.

She said: “There is no place for animal suffering in a modern, compassionate society and I am delighted that the draft Bill has now been issued for consultation.

“I know there are many local people, animal lovers such as myself, pet owners and farmers who have a genuine interest in animal welfare and I hope they will take an interest in the consultation process.”

Animal welfare charity, the SSPCA is supporting the new Bill.

Spokeswoman Leonora Merry said: “We are looking forward to playing a major role in the enforcement of this Bill which will consolidate and modernise existing animal welfare legislation which is almost 100-years-old.”

Two weeks ago an Irvine woman was banned from having pets for LIFE after admitting two charges of cruelty to dogs at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.
