Public notice change plan abandoned

Public notices will continue to be published in local newspapers after ministers dropped plans to let councils advertise on the internet.

The Scottish Government had hoped to save councils about £4 million a year by removing an obligation to place notices, such as planning applications and road closures, in the press.

Finance Secretary John Swinney conceded the political opposition to the plan was too great but warned that councils will be disappointed.
