Describe Star Style
My business is a ladies’ and gents’ hair salon. We cover all aspects of hairstyling, specialising in colour and wedding hair.
We also provide clients with micro-ring extensions and Keratin hair-straightening, and there is also a beauty room within our salon run by Shirley Ann Barr.
Shirley offers her clients waxing, tanning, Shellac, false eyelashes, and massaging. Coming soon are slimming body wraps and body skin scrubs.
When did the business start?
I started Star Style as a freelance hairdresser, which helped me work round my sons’ schooling and my husband’s work.
In 2006, I decided I needed premises as I was becoming busier and opened my first salon in a small shop in Fleming Terrace. As we got busier, I found bigger premises in the Irvine indoor market in 2009.
However, the market closed its doors on May 2011. By this time, I had two girls working full-time and one working part-time for me. Also, Shirley Ann’s beauty room was within my salon, so it wasn’t just my job at stake from the market’s closure. Thankfully, within a month, I had found premises in High Street. Star Style has now been opened at 13 High Street for a year and a half now and we’re doing well.
Is it hard to maintain a work/life balance?
When I first started freelance, striking a balance between work and family life wasn’t too hard. I worked when my sons were at school and on a couple of nights when my husband Alan came home from work.
Now, my two sons are grown up and it’s much easier to manage. I have also got a wonderful husband who has supported me in every decision I have made, and my kids gave me the inspiration to succeed for their future, and hopefully to provide them with a good role model.
What did you do before setting up your business?
I went to Ravenspark Academy until 1988, then went straight to Kilmarnock College to study my first year in hairdressing. From there, I started in a salon to finish my training.
After qualifying, I went on to do courses in advanced cutting and colouring. I had a couple of other hairdressing jobs before Star Style, which I loved, but it was a dream come true to have my own salon based in my home town.
What’s the secret of your success?
The secret of my success is down to my determination to give 110 per cent in providing great customer service. It also helps to have a great team working with me in the salon. My advice to any young entrepreneurs is to start at the bottom of the ladder and put all you have towards knowing your business and creating a service that will help you to achieve your goal. There is no need to rush to the top - take your time and you will get where you want to be.
What are your plans for the future?
At the moment I have a part time stylist, a Saturday girl, and an apprentice who has just qualified as a stylist, so we are just in the process of building a clientèle for her at the moment. Hopefully, Star Style will expand in the near future and we’ll be able to help create more jobs in the area and continue to keep our customers happy.
