MSP welcomes food waste collection service

Households in North Ayrshire are set to have food waste collected from their homes.

North Ayrshire is one of only seven councils that will introduce the food waste collection service later this year.

An average Scottish home wastes £430 worth of food and drink a year.

MSP Margaret Burgess has welcomed the move to further reduce food waste.

“After the festive season when people celebrate and eat well, it is worth stopping to think about what happens when we waste food and drink. Every household spending more than it needs to on food is facing an unneeded financial drain on resources.

She added:“The fact North Ayrshire is joining the many Scottish local authorities who are now collecting food waste separately is a significant step forward.

“However, we all have a re-sponsibility to do more if we are to reduce food waste down to a sustainable level.”
