Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe has hit out at the need for food banks, calling on the government to raise the minimum wage.
Mr Donohoe raised the matter at Scottish Questions in Westminster, suggest-ing that the need for food banks was because of cuts imposed by the coalition government.
“It is abhorrent that we should witness such poverty among those who go out and work for a living and shows that perhaps the government should start looking seriously at raising the minimum wage or introducing the living wage as it is becoming apparent that workers are struggling to make ends meet!
“I would in fact, praise the service as without it many people would be left in shocking situations.
“ It is not that I am criticising the food banks – I am criticising the government for not acting to prevent the need for them.
“They’re cuts have gone too far and too deep and it is not just the most vulnerable in our society who are suffering but also hard workers who should be reaping the benefits of their contributions not finding them-selves less and less able to provide for themselves and their families.”
